Superintendent's Update - December 4, 2020

Dear Monomoy Families,

I hope you all enjoyed a restful and safe Thanksgiving break. As you know, we have had two cases of COVD-19 in our schools in the past week, one at our middle school that merited quarantining a cohort of students and staff, and one at Harwich Elementary School that did not. The difference is that in the latter case, public health officials were able to work with the family to trace exactly when the individual was exposed, and therefore know the infectious timeline. That, combined with the break from school, meant that no quarantining was needed, save for the individual and their close contacts.

These situations serve as a good reminder of why we need to keep our bubbles small and avoid gathering with those not in our household. The more we can limit contact, the better we can reduce the risk of exposure to COVID, and the better we can trace the exposures that do occur. The measures we have in place in our schools, including masks, distancing, and minimizing intermingling, have limited additional spread in school when cases do occur. If we can all continue those measures outside of school, we will help limit the spread of COVID in our community.

On Monday, all families were emailed a form to complete to select the learning mode choice for the second half of the year. It’s important that we receive responses for all students in the district, even if you do not want any changes. Our administrators will need to rearrange staffing and space to accommodate the requested changes, and they cannot do so without full information. If you have not yet submitted this information, please click here to access the form to do so. If you have already submitted the form, thank you! If you have any questions, send them to backtoschool@monomoy.edu. The form will close Monday, Dec. 7.

While many of the holiday activities that usually brighten our schools during this time of year are not possible, there is still some joy to be found. Our high school’s Select Choir has shared a video of seasonal carols - click here to enjoy!

Take care and stay safe.

Dr. Scott Carpenter, Superintendent
Monomoy Regional School District
