Chatham Elementary School to hold community read focused on education
March 5, 2021 -- Chatham Elementary School and Monomoy Regional School District are collaborating with local organizations to offer a community read focused on education, and the guiding question, “What would it take to transform schools into modern organizations capable of supporting deep learning for all?” As part of its work with deeper learning, Chatham Elementary educators, in conjunction with the Massachusetts Department of Education’s Kaleidoscope Deeper Learning Collective and New Pedagogies for Deep Learning Global Partnership, have been studying and implementing a variety of tools and strategies to encourage deep, long-lasting learning by students. CES is inviting the community to join in this learning, and to investigate what this means for our schools and our districts at large via book discussions and a presentation from education expert, Dr. Jal Mehta, who authored In Search of Deeper Learning: The Quest to Remake the American High School.
The first opportunity to engage in the community will be via the “all community read.” The community read is an opportunity for a variety of members of the community to come together and discuss deeper learning, and its impact on education. Chatham Elementary School is partnering with Eldredge Library, Brooks Free Library, and other local organizations to encourage parents and caregivers, educators, community members, and anyone interested in education to join together for this collaborative discourse. The second opportunity is for the community to join together with Dr. Mehta to hear his presentation on deeper learning, and engage in a larger discussion as a whole community.
Thus, there are two parts to this invitation and the public is encouraged to join in the “all community read”, the presentation, and/or both. They are related but not dependent on each other. The “all community read” book discussion groups will be held in March and April 2021. The discussion groups will meet on a variety of days and times, remotely, in conjunction with libraries and other organizations, including Chatham Elementary School. The “all community read” groups will plan to meet twice this spring to discuss the book. More information on the discussion groups and a link to sign up can be found here.
On April 28, 2021, at 6:30 p.m., Dr. Mehta will join the community for an in-depth and interactive discussion of his book, In Search of Deeper Learning. This event will be open to the public and attendees do not need to have participated in the book discussion groups to participate in this event.
